ANTI-CORRUPTION CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY

On October 8 the president published his state program on intensifying struggle against corruption for the period of 2002-2006. When one looks at all the turmoil, produced by another wave of the anti-corruption campaign, he wonders whether there are still left those who are able to believe in the efficacy of the state-run struggle against the phenomenon, which is the integral part of the state. From the logical point of view the very notion “State anti-corruption program” is a nonsense in itself. And it is not for nothing that around the world it is opposition, which is fighting against corruption in high echelons of power, rather than the government itself.

US ALARMED OVER LACK OF FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS IN BELARUS

The United States of America ring alarm bells over the Belarusian parliament’s passage of the new Law on the freedom of faith and religious organizations, urging president Lukashenko not to approve it, said the political counselor of the US mission in OSCE Bruce Connak, speaking at the session of the OSCE Permanent Council, which took place in Vienna on October 10.

KIEV COURT OPENS LEGAL PROCEEDINGS AGAINST KUCHMA

Judge of the appellate court of Kiev Yuri Vasilenko ruled to institute legal action against the president of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, said the judge at today’s press-conference in Kiev. According to Vasilenko, the decision was passed after the consideration of an appeal, filed by deputies Alexander Moroz, Julia Timoshenko, Grigory Omelchenko, Iosif Vinsky and Alexander Turchinov, in which president Kuchma is charged over power abuse and a series of heavy felonies.

ORTHODOX CHURCH UPHOLDS DISCRIMINATIVE RELIGIOUS LAW

The Belarusian Orthodox Church has positively evaluated the new law “On the freedom of faith and religious organizations”, passed by the “house of representatives” of the Belarusian “parliament” on June 27 and the “council of the republic” on October 2 (46 senators voted in favor of the law and 2 – against).

IVASHKEVICH’S VERDICT LEFT IN FORCE

On October 15 the Minsk city court ruled to leave in full force the verdict of the Pervomaisky district court of Minsk, passed against the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Rabochy” Viktor Ivashkevich. The jury turned down the appeal, filed by the lawyer Tatyana Stankevich. The court hearings opened at 10a.m. and lasted for no more than half an hour.

US DEPT. OF STATE STRONGLY CRITICAL OF BELARUS RELIGIOUS LAW


Among the former Soviet republics Belarus has the worst record of freedom of faith violations. Recently the Belarusian parliament approved one of the most repressive religious laws in the whole of Eurasia. Former Supreme Soviet chairman Stanislav Shushkevich received an official reply on October 14 from the acting chairman of the Minsk city court. According to Mr.Turko, the size of the pension of the former leader of the Belarusian state, which now constitutes around 2 dollars, is absolutely lawful.
